Acupuncture is a procedure that uses very fine needles to stimulate specific points on the body in order to correct imbalance. Points are found on particular channels called meridians which are pathways for the circulation of qi, or vital energy. Qi can be understood as our systems’ functional energy which enlivens our organs and our entire body.

Shiatsu is an ancient form of Japanese bodywork that works on the meridian systems of the body. It is usually performed over the clothes. Tui na is a form of Chinese massage which uses specific techniques on the meridian systems and areas of the musculature. Acupressure involves manual pressure and massage on meridians and acupuncture points.

Herbs, as prescribed by a qualified practitioner, help address symptoms and system imbalances. Taken internally or applied topically, herbs are an excellent complement to weekly or biweekly acupuncture treatments.

In Chinese medicine, cupping is the use of glass domes to suction areas on the skin. Your practitioner might choose this modality when there is a need to draw out pathogenic energy from the body or to promote circulation of blood and relaxation.

Moxibustion is an ancient therapy which involves burning the herb Artemsia (a form of Mugwort) over specified points or areas of the body. Moxibustion, or moxa, may be chosen by your practitioner when there is a need to warm certain areas or organs or to promote the movement of vital energy (qi) and blood.

As patients, part of creating and reinforcing wellness often involves awareness about what is being consumed in daily diets. At Red Peony, we use Chinese medicine theory to offer advice about which foods may be beneficial to your health and which may aggravate or perpetuate the condition you are seeking to resolve.
